Aerobic systems are common around San Antonio

Many homes outside the sewer lines use aerobic treatment units that spray treated, chlorinated water on the yard. In Bexar County, 68% of the 682 OSSF authorizations in 2025 were aerobic, based on TCEQ data compiled by DulyTrack.1

Questions

How often does an aerobic system need service in Texas?

TCEQ requires the maintenance provider on a contract to inspect and report at least once every four months (three times a year). With approved electronic monitoring it can be every six months.

Do I have to keep a maintenance contract?

New aerobic systems start with an initial two-year service policy. After that, Texas rules let a single-family homeowner maintain their own system in some cases, but local rules can be stricter. Bexar County says owners are responsible for keeping a service contract on file.
